Keeping our oceans alive

The oceans and their resources are critical to food security and global human welfare, while providing an essential buffer to global climate warming and to the decline of biodiversity. In support of the protection of functioning ecosystems, BASF developed a first-of-its-kind, award winning evaluation tool- the EcoSun Pass tool - to calculate the environmental effect of UV filters in sunscreen formulation. Through this, we aim to help our customers achieve improved environmental compatibility for their sun care formulations, in turn, preserving all aquatic life affected by UV filters.

BASF tackles the challenges in Suncare

“Eco-conscious consumers are increasingly looking for more sustainable products with improved environmental compatibility.” Senior Application Technologist Dr Myriam Sohn shines a spotlight on current trends and challenges in sun care product development.

Product Carbon Footprint

How much greenhouse gas emissions are associated with a product along its life cycle? This question has become increasingly important over the last few years, and a product carbon footprint (PCF) can help to find answers.

Turning plastic waste into new chemical products

Plastic has proven benefits during its use phase – for example, preservation of food loss in packaging applications, lightweight construction of vehicles, and building insulation. Plastic waste, however, has become a major global challenge. Consequently, there is increasing regulatory pressure regarding recycling targets and recyclability on the one hand and strong commitments of our customers towards increasing the share of recycled material in their offerings on the other hand. Solving these challenges requires innovation and joint efforts globally across the value chain. BASF will contribute to tackling this by developing innovative technologies that promote the recycling of plastic.
